JIEYING WANG
LOCATION
Entrance to the Annie Smith Centre. Sheridan College Trafalgar Campus, Oakville ON
Description of Project
For this Founding Wandering assignment, I chose the location of the outside of Annie Smith building. The Annie Smith building is the location I spend lots of time in Sheridan, because most of my classrooms are located in this building. The door is where I get in and out of this building. Whether I am going to the classroom or going to another building, this door is where I will pass. This year will be the last year of my university. Most of my friends have graduated, I always came to Sheridan alone. I want to express my loneliness through this audio, and how am I enjoying this loneliness and enjoying the last year at Sheridan.
In this audio, I mainly used three parts of the sound, the footsteps, the sound of opening and closing the door, and the natural background. I ignored other sound in the environment such as other people talking or walking. I wanted to make the whole audio more focused on my perspective.
I started with the winter as the beginning of the timeline. I expressed the winter with the footsteps of stepping on the snow. This is followed by the rainy season and the early spring. These two times are a good expression of the days I spent in Sheridan. Also, I did the audio piece in the winter, and I will end my university in early spring. The footsteps also included my different steps of slowness and urgency. Similarly, the door sound also includes opening the door by myself and opening the door with the automated button. Both the footsteps and the door sound represent my different states when I walking in to the building, for example: holding something in my hands and cannot open the door, walking slow, running in rush and so on. This may sound like I repeat one thing over and over again, which just like I was make art in Sheridan all the time and it makes me enjoy the place.
