Description of Project
The empty church sanctuary functions in much the same way a galleryʼs white cube does. That is, it is a space that separates itself from the outside world through both architecture and concept. The noise, light and style of the street is
muffled and replaced by the lofty space, coloured windows and, relative architectural distinction of the church. The disconnection while moving from one environment into another vaguely resembles a similar feeling when moving through dreams or emotions. As such, this space becomes an internal space; a physical form of an abstract place in the mind. The "mind-place" the empty church represents is one of introspection and contemplation. Though the gallery encourages travel down the same avenues of thought, the work displayed there is the motivation. In the sanctuary the individual and their beliefs are the only motivation.
Sound, being a sense harder to shut out than vision, often influences oneʼs focus and concentration. That being said, if the physicality of the sanctuary (as it speaks to its conceptual representations) can be accurately recorded through sound, the idea of physically moving into a space as a metaphor for entering a state of thought and feeling begins to revert back to a more abstract movement.
"The Sanctuary" is meant to investigate this along with what happens to the sanctuary itself. Does one continue to enter it but via itʼs soundtrack or does the imagery cease to be of importance as the sound is a direct representation of an "mind-place"?
