Description of Project
For this project, I wanted to focus on creating a sound that evoked specific feelings, I used recordings of myself singing and manipulating the sounds to distort them so they would become unrecognizable. I wanted my work to evoke different mental, emotional and physical states.
The songs I am singing represent my walks to and from school. In the morning I am very nervous and anxious, when I created the peace I was feeling nervous so when creating the piece I was trying to find sounds that felt relaxing. I noticed due to my stress levels the sounds progressively felt more anxiety-inducing. We live in a society where we crave voyeurism but also appreciate our privacy, this piece plays with the anxiety we have from being discovered by distorting my voice making it evoke feelings versus telling a story or people experiencing lyrics.
In contrast to me listening to the sound piece when I was nervous when I was tired and calm the sounds I created come across as calming and meditative; I found myself focusing in on specific tones and sounds. I was very interested in the sound works we listened to in class that make people feel something. I like when my work can be interpreted differently depending on the viewer and their point of view. I want my viewers to take the sound and not try to force a specific feeling on it, I want my viewers to feel open to interpretation. My work is open to interpretation and I want my viewers to get the most out of their experience. If we listen to it at different times and when feeling different emotions their interpretation of the work can change drastically.
Overall the work conveys many emotions and I wanted to make a work that allows people to
experience it differently based on their emotional state.
